“Big Island” Hawaii

The story of the “Big Island” cannot be told without the legend of Pele, the volcano goddess. There are different versions of the tale… One is that Pele had wanderlust and wanted to venture to other lands… The other is that she was fleeing her sister the sea goddess Namaka. In her quest to find a home, she created the Hawaiian island chain. With her Paoa stick she struck the ocean floor, at each strike a volcano erupted, only to be put out by the sea goddess. Finally, Pele found her home in the Kilauea volcano on the island of Hawaii. The volcano is still active to this day. Of course, there is no great tale though without romance… Pele fell in love with Lohiau, a mortal man. He was a prince on Kauai. The Hawaiians say that to this day that temple still exists there where they met and married.

The “Big Island” is the youngest in the Hawaiian chain. The island is unique because visitors can see snow, surf, and watch a volcano erupt all on one island. At the top of the Big Island is Mauna Kea which is to home to one of the most famous Astronomy Observatories in the world. At sea level there are the black sand beaches Which were created by lava flows being ground down into fine black sand.

In addition to the scenic overlooks take the time to stop by the coffee plantations. My favorite is Kona Joes on Mamalahoa Hwy. It’s a long drive around the island; you will need to “refuel”. Enjoy a cup of coffee on the lanai that overlooks the Pacific ocean.

The “Big Island” has everything a visitor could ask for in Hawaii. Bring home a special souvenir of your trip, one that your family will cherish for years: a family beach portrait on the beautiful black sand beaches. You can trust Tricia & Co. to capture that memory.
